Fitting instructions Road Kit

If you have any constructive comments on how to improve the belt drive kit, Kevin would like to hear from you.

1, First fit the clutch in the normal way. Kevin uses some grease and chain lube on the large clutch bearing a nd wipe the friction plates with clean engine oil, in accordance with the EBC instructions on the box.

2, In order to set the clutch to the correct adjustment, hold / push the front plate with your fingers whilst screwing in the steel castle threaded bit. When you find the ‘biting point’ (when the front plate just starts to lift), back it off 1/3 of a turn.

3, Fit the belt and front pulley. You should be able to take the belt on and off without touching the gearbox adjuster. Check the centres are 216mm apart – the belt should not be tight, as this will not allow the clutch to move when the lever is pulled.

4, Spin the clutch to allow the front pulley to settle in its natural place

5, Fit thin steel spacers between bearing & pulley as required.

6, Fit the outer clutch cover to see if all clutch parts clear the cover.

7, Adjust with 1 or 2 spacers to make front pulley clear the chain covers.

8, Check that the belt is running on the clutch pulley (it can run anywhere ON the rear pulley)

9, Once all working with nothing touching the chain covers, take off the front pulley and using the alloy jig (supplied) fit / locate the seal in place with your own sealant  (Kevin uses solid setting silicone sealant RTV). Use the pulley and castle nut to secure. Leave overnight for the sealant to go off .

10, Re-fit front pulley and covers and go for a good ride. No oil is required in the chain cover but if you wish to run with oil the belt and the plates are fine with or without oil.

11, Once the kit is fitted and the gearbox is set to the correct centres (216mm), you can if you wish, make some small alloy spacers to fit in the gearbox adjustment slots; or drill and tap a ¼” or 6mm threaded hole between slots into the gearbox. This will prevent the gearbox from moving and upsetting your adjustments

Areas to check on the Velocette 7 & 9 plate clutches for damage

1. The bearing should be a slide fit on back plate & move freely, not be loose & rattling!

2. Back and front plates should be smooth where plain steel plates make contact, see above.

3. Steel threaded spring holder should be a good fit into front plate thread

 4. Back plate should not have a groove where sleeve gear distance piece touches.
